Selling agents sav that many foundrymen and steel manufacturers have held off their purchases as long as possible and must get additional supplies in the immediate future in such quantities as w'ill strengthen the market. It is argued that present prices are as low as can reasonably be expected and that with the revival of a strong buying movement quotations will promptly take a firmer base. The foundrymen in particular are said to be growing eager to cover requirements for the latter half of the year. If they are the market will, without doubt, feel some effect in the present week, but so far there has been little except inquiries to back up the optimistic view of the situation. Within a few days there have been placed some orders of magnitude for structural material and standard rail3 but it is supposed that with the signing of these contracts important business is practically at an end for a time and the trade does not look for new orders of any size for some weeks. Small orders are likely to continue, selling agents say, throughout the summer. The American Bridge Company has booked a large order for bridges for the West Shore railroad, also for steel to he used by the Pullman Car Company in turning out cars. The Milliken Brothers who have the contract for steel bridges for the Long Island Railroad, have distributed orders for plates and structural shapes among a number of mills. Some other business that was expected to mature before this is still under negotiation. It is remarked in the trade that shipments of finished steel may now be obtained with all the promptness that may be desired and this is taken as proof that the stress of orders has eased.
